Augmented Documents

Author can augment your documents on export by adding a type of metadata called ‘Visual-Meta’ as an appendix.

‘Metadata’ means ‘data about data’, in other words, this describes what your document is about.

Visual-Meta is an approach for adding information about what your document is (who wrote it), how it is structured (headings) and how it’s connected (references) in an open and robust manner.

These documents open in any PDF viewer.

When opened in our free ‘Reader’ PDF viewer, the user can interact with your document in useful ways. Have a look at the Walkthrough to see how this works.

Notes

  1. In Reader, if a PDF document does not have Visual-Meta attached, but it has an academic DOI on the first page, Reader will attempt to resolve the DOI and append Visual-Meta for you.

  2. Only References in the style of [1] will work for click to see a pop-up in Reader and currently only documents exported from Author has this feature.

  3. We use the term ‘augment’ in honour of our friend and mentor, Doug Engelbart. You can read more about Doug on The Future of Text.
